Wettest April sees retail sales slide

The wettest April since records began put the dampeners on high street trade last month, as retail sales fell by 3.3 per cent on a like-for-like basis compared with a year earlier.

Figures from the British Retail Consortium (BRC) show total sales, which include outlets opened in the last 12 months, were also down, falling by one per cent compared with a 6.9 per cent rise in April 2011.

It said that record rainfall and low temperatures had hit sales of clothing and footwear, although some types of homewares received a boost.
